Grand Gateway - Regional Safety and Mobility

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Welcome

In Elmwood Park, public safety has been one of the highest concerns for many years, particularly where Grand Avenue crosses the Metra/CP. The  Village of Elmwood Park in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways (CCDOTH) are committed to resolving the safety and mobility issues at this crossing and are thrilled to announce the initiation of a Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) study that will inform a Phase I Preliminary Engineering study. Ultimately, these studies along with input from the Elmwood Park community will determine the best possible plan for separating rail, vehicle, and pedestrian traffic.

The Grand Gateway Project has many benefits including increased safety, improved access throughout the community, and a renewed central business district. In addition, it will also improve mobility for the entire region.

Project History

2005: Metra accident at Grand Ave. Crossing; 2007: IDOT Feasibility Study; 2008: National Transportation Safety Board provided Safety Recommendations; 2011-15: Crash study; 2016: Jurisdiction Review; 2017: IDOT Kick-Off Meeting for Phase I Preliminary Engineering Study; 2020: Notice to Proceed - Phase I Preliminary Engineering Study

“This is a regional project. This isn’t about Elmwood Park – it's about all of our communities along this corridor, including the City of Chicago, working together to really improve safety, address congestion and provide an opportunity to redevelop.”
Mayor Angelo “Skip” Saviano
